Both the BBC and Channel 4 are celebrating the launch of their respective TV services this week.
On 2nd November 1936, the BBC launched the world's first regular television service from Alexandra Place in North London. The programme line-up consisted of the traditional opening ceremony followed by a Movietone newsreel before closing with a variety show featuring the BBC National Orchestra and Adele Dixon. This first broadcast lasted only two hours and began television's domination as the medium of the twentieth century.
Channel 4 is celebrating thirty years since launching in 1982 with its '30 at 30' collection featuring a variety of shows from broadcasters past and present. Viewers will be able to see shows ranging from Brookside, the Paralympics and the sequel to the highly successful animated feature, The Snowman. Channel 4 viewers can also enjoy the offer of a different film title for 30p every day courtesy of Channel 4's Film 4 service through 4oD.
